2Direction of travel arrow is backwards  Mar 03, 2012
By Andrew Sharpe
Warning, the direction of arrow on this compass is backwards, and will confuse you. I wrote to Brunton, and they agreed that it was confusing, gave me a few excuses why it was ok, and then said that they don't make this compass anymore, and that the new OSS mirror compasses have the direction of travel arrow in the other direction . This is rather critical for taking map bearings and following them, so be careful. Let me know if you want to see the email from them.

I found that the markings on the compass are rather easy to remove (with just some scraping with a fingernail!), so I removed the arrow, and drew another one in the proper direction (the way you sight). So, perhaps the fact that the markings are easy to remove (which would normally be a bad thing) in this case is helpful.

I will probably not use this compass, because even though it is probably built well, it does feel a bit like a toy. The thermometer is silly, and the fact that their declination adjustment is tool-less means that the vial must be turned to adjust it, and of course this is the reason that they do not have orienting lines in the vial, only on the bezel. Those lines are much more difficult to use on a map than lines inside the vial. Add to the fact that the degree markings are actually on a label, instead of engraved, and you end up with a $30 compass that I would not want to rely on.

5I Use it for SAR Land Navigation and Orienteering  Nov 16, 2011
By Bob
This is a classic mirrored sighting compass. I purchased it to use for land navigation when the GPS does not work due to trees and bad weather. In Michigan we do many searches in dense forest where GPS is useless. We have classes and put on orienteering competitions for practice; this compass works very well. The base plate allows use on TOPO maps with UTM, however I prefer the square grid that I keep on the lanyard for quick readings from both H and V lines.

The needle is very stable and calms down quickly which is a sign of a modern orienteering compass based on the Russian design. It is good for orienteering but some might find the Eclipse more useful. I like to take a sighting on a distant object using the mirror some others like to hold the compass at the end of the lanyard and look over it.

This... is an excellent compass. This is what you want when you're out and about, roving across the countryside, with a nice sturdy topo map at your side, leaping from tree to tree.... the Larch.... but I digress. Truly, buy this one.
